Genesis - Day 9

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

So God created mankind in his own image,
    in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.

Genesis 1:26-27

Today, I want to consider the human likeness of God. Let me put it another way, how does the human image reflect the ultimate expression in who God is and therefore how we can understand God more by looking at how humans work.

Let’s think about love for a moment. Humans love to love. Generally speaking, given the right conditions, most humans are capable of feeling a deep love for others. Just picture someone you love. Capture that feeling for a moment.

When we love someone, we desire their good. We want to do kind things for them. We want to see them We want to protect them. We want the best for them. Now even in the best of us, this love we feel is tainted by the selfishness of sin. Our love often becomes needy, fleeting or conditional.

But the Bible tells us that God is love (1 John 4:8). I take it that John means in God we see perfect love. He isn’t needy. His love doesn’t come and go. It’s not weakened by selfishness. God’s love has only one condition - His choice to love.

But come back to that love you feel. We are told that the love of Christ surpasses knowledge (Ephesians 3). That God abounds in steadfast love (Psalm 86). God loves us. It’s a love that sent Jesus to die on the cross for you.

Whatever love you might feel towards another human is nothing compared to the love God has for His people. For you if you trust in Christ. It’s like holding a candle to the sun.

Do you see that today? Do you know it? I pray that you will.

For Today:
  • Reflect on the love you have for someone.
  • How is your love affected by your sin?
  • Consider God’s perfect love for you.

Pray:
  • Praise the Father that He is love.
  • Give thanks for Christ whose loves His people and shows us the love of the Father.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others know the love of God today.
