Grow Pt. 1

Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
    whatever they do prospers.
4 Not so the wicked!
    They are like chaff
    that the wind blows away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
6 For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

Psalm 1

One of the biggest questions I ask myself in life is, who do you want to be? For instance, do you want to be someone who just goes with the crowd? Or, do you want to be someone who stands up for what is right even when it’s unpopular.

Psalm 1 poses something of the same question. Who do you want to be? There’s two options. There’s the one who walks in step with the wicked. That is, they follow the way of the world. It’s not said, but it’s implied, this person is like a tree with no roots whose branches are dead and has no inner strength. When God’s judgement comes, they will be blown away.

But there is another option. You can be a tree that is strong. Whose leaves are green all year round and who has a strength to stand in the greatest storm of God’s judgement. Isn’t that who you want to be?

I do. So how? Well, by delighting in and meditating on God’s Word - His law day and night. Growing in your knowledge of God and through that knowledge - your faith, hope and love in Him. Self help books, life experiences, these things all have their place. But only the Word of God has the elements we need to truly stand firm in life and in the judgement to come.

For Today:
  • Who do you want to be in life?
  • Are you convinced that knowing God through His Word is the key to true growth & strength in life?
  • How are you going at reading the Scriptures at the moment?

Pray:
  • Praise the Father that He is the source of all strength and truth.
  • Give thanks for Jesus Christ who stood firm on the Word of God.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others be strengthened through the Word of God.
