Wisdom Wednesday

All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full.
To the place the streams come from, there they return again.
All things are wearisome, more than one can say.
The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing.

Ecclesiastes 1:7-8

Ancient wisdom with a timeless truth. Just as the sea is never full, our desire for the pleasures of the senses never seems to be satisfied. Look no further than modern advertising. Is there anything free of advertising today? A new TV Series, a new destination, a new experience for you or for your kids.

But there would be no advertising if it didn’t work. So the question we must ask is, why is advertising so successful? It is because of what the writer of Ecclesiastes says… we are never satisfied. Or at least, sensually speaking, we can never be satisfied. The bungee jump feeling doesn’t last. The first love feeling fades. The wonder of an amazing view seen daily begins to lose its effect.

What is the answer to our need for satisfaction? Jesus tells us in John 4,

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
In Christ, we have an object, a person, a relationship in which we can find eternal satisfaction. A contentment that will never fade because it isn’t found in the pleasure of the senses but in the spiritual filling of our need for God.

If you have Christ. You have everything.

For Today:
  • What have you been tempted to chase after lately? What pleasure?
  • Do you find your satisfaction in knowing Christ? Why/why not?
  • What does this wisdom look like for you this week? How could you resist temptation & how could you pursue satisfaction in Christ?

Pray:
  • Praise God the Father who provides all we need in the gift of His Son.
  • Give thanks for Christ who gives us all we need for contentment and satisfaction in life.
  • Ask God for help from His Holy Spirit to help you and others see what you have in Christ and to enjoy Him.
