S.O.S.
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
Acts 2:42
I grew up around food. My Dad is Italian, he was raised in a small village in the southeast of Italy. My ‘nona’ (we didn’t call her that, it made her feel old), never failed to feed us whenever we went to visit. It was stereotypical, ‘mange, mange’ (eat, eat), all the time. I don’t think it’s particularly Italian or European to associate family with eating.
In Acts 2, we see God’s people gathering together, devoting themselves to the apostle’s teaching. But also to fellowship. Fellowship is just a Bible way of saying, ‘hanging out’. We are told that when they gather together, they eat.
Acts 2:42 is probably referring to a communion type meal but I think it is fair to say that God’s gift of food is designed to bring people together and how much more so, God’s people.
This is why we have dinner every Sunday. To be family. To celebrate, mourn, comfort, encourage, to just enjoy each other over food and to welcome outsiders in hospitality. We do it for fellowship over food.
Can I encourage you to stick around for dinner whenever you can? To make it part of coming to Church. To engage with others beyond the surface conversation. To welcome visitors to our space and eat with them. It does take energy. Sometimes the food isn’t your favourite. But it’s a sacrifice that glorifies God and encourages others.
I look forward to fellowshipping with you this Sunday.
