Wisdom Wednesday

The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways,
but the folly of fools is deception.

Proverbs 14:8

“Know thyself” is one of the most ancient recorded philosophical maxims or sayings. It’s a timeliness saying in that it’s principle is timeless. As the writer of Proverbs says, the wisdom of the prudent is to reflect on themselves and their ways. Whereas the folly of fools is to deceive themselves, not seeing themselves rightly.

We aren’t a culture that loves to reflect on ourselves thoughtfully. We prefer thoughtless opinions spoken in the moment. Social media encourages us to brand ourselves rather than to reveal our true hidden self.

But as Christians we must resist these cultural impulses. This requires patience and intentionality. Sometimes life feels a bit like a waterhole that’s been stirred up, dirt and sand making it impossible to see your own reflection. But given time, the water settles and you can see clearly.

Do you take time to give thought to your ways? Do you spend time in reflection? Or are you just moving so fast, from one thing to another, that you never get to actually think. Maybe you are doing great in life and as a follow of Jesus? But maybe there are some things to change or grow in?

Take the time to find out.

For Today:
  • Find ten minutes to ask yourself the question - how am I going in life?
  • Ask yourself another question - how am I going as a follower of Jesus?
  • Praise God for the positives and commit to changing one thing.

Pray:
  • Praise the Father that He is the giver of life and wisdom.
  • Give thanks for Jesus who showed us the perfection of wisdom in His sacrificial life.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others be wise in giving thought to your ways.
