S.O.S.

Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
    whatever they do prospers.

Psalm 1:1-3

There are things I think will make me happy today. Things like, sitting on the lounge all day watching sports. Or, perfect peace, quiet and a book. Or, maybe just taking a day off from the stresses of going to Church.

The truth is, choosing one of those options might actually make me ‘happier’ for a short period of time. But the Psalmist reminds us that ultimately those decisions result in something like a tree whose leaf withers.

You see this with excessive entertainment and comfort I reckon. It saps (enjoy that) our will to do anything that might be hard but perhaps more rewarding.

But the one who delights in God and His teachings. The one who makes the wise decision to drink from His streams of water (later shown to be Jesus and the gospel). The person who fights off sinful desires and instead goes to the place where God’s Word is taught and reflected upon…

That person yields good fruit and whatever they do prospers (in the spiritual sense). They are a healthy tree and ultimately they are blessed (happy).

For Today:
  • Are you tempted to choose temporary happiness over everlasting blessedness today?
  • Have you experienced deep joy/happiness from drinking from God’s Word?
  • What does choosing long-term blessing over short-term pleasure look like for you today?

Pray:
  • Praise the Father that He is the blessed God who shares His blessedness with people.
  • Give thanks for Jesus who gives us true joy and happiness now and in the life to come.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others make wise choices that lead to true happiness/blessedness.
