As iron sharpens iron,
so one person sharpens another

Proverbs 27:17

We live in a time where people are more interested in blunting each other than in sharpening. That’s my general assessment. We want affirmation. Echo chambers. People to agree with us. And we only listen to them if they do.

Maybe the issue is that we are no longer made of the right stuff, we have become chalk where once we were metal.

In any case, what is the remedy? Well, first we need to be stronger in ourselves. How can we be sharpened if we aren’t made of tougher stuff? We need internal strength that comes from knowing who we are in Christ; deeply loved, created as we are and Spirit-filled (capable of change).

And we need to be willing to engage in the sharpening process. People don’t grow if they don’t engage with different opinions or listen to critique. Importantly, where does Christian sharpening come from first and foremost?

It comes from the lodestone of the Word of God, applied to our lives. That is how we sharpen one another best.

For Today:

  • How do you go, listening to different opinions or people giving you feedback?
  • What do you find hard about it? How could you grow?
  • How could you sharpen someone today as we gather for Church?

Pray:
  • Praise the Father that He has made us who we are, in His image.
  • Give thanks for Jesus who shows us how loved we are by dying for us.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others sharpen each other today by His Word.
