Sing

Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord:
“I will sing to the Lord,
    for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver
he has hurled into the sea.

Exodus 15:1-2

I want you to imagine something with me. Imagine Australians had been invaded and enslaved. Forced to work in hard labour, doing all the worst jobs. Receiving only the food you could grow on the side. No sick leave, no medical support, no schooling. Just hardship.

Then one day. After crying out for help for so many years. You were rescued. God brought that enslaving nation to its own downfall. They fell apart. You were free. What’s the first thing you would do? I reckon you would have a party. I reckon you would sing.

Singing is the natural response of humans. It’s a way of expressing emotions but individual but particularly corporate. It’s a way to rejoice together. And singing has some magical qualities. It can multiply our feelings and sear into our brains the memory of both the meaning of the songs and how we felt singing them.

So it is that Israel rejoices in song at their liberation from Egypt. They exalt in the wonderful works that God has done for them.

This is why we sing. Are you convinced that God has rescued you from sin and death? Do you see that you have hope and blessings in Him? Then rejoice. Sing. Sing today, but particularly when we gather together, let’s sing a joyful song to the Lord for He is good.

For Today:
  • Do you remember a significant moment in your life because of singing?
  • How do you feel about singing generally? Does it come naturally to you?
  • Reflect on your singing at Village - does it correspond to what God has done for you?

Pray:
  • Praise the Father that He is the rescuer of His people.
  • Give thanks for Jesus Christ who gives us reason to sing.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others celebrate God’s work through joyful singing.
