Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind.

Psalm 107
:21

The pessimist looks at the world and sees calamity at every turn. The optimist sees linear progress. What is your bent towards? What should the Christian see? What God sees right?

So what does God see? Well, all perspectives I think. But truthfully and He tells us something of this. The pessimist is right in seeing a sinful world in cyclical futility. Oh sure, some things get better but other things get worse.

At the same time, the gospel is making progress and so there is always light in the world and we can be optimistic not necessarily of societal or cultural progress but certainly of spiritual progress.

I’ll be honest. I fit much more into the pessimist category. Particularly when it comes to thinking the best of people or events. I’m asking God to help me be more optimistic (against my bent) and to trust that His Spirit can do miracles in the hearts and minds of humans. And I’m working on my optimism by giving thanks for the good things God has done and is doing in the people around me.

For Today:
  • Where do you see God doing good things?
  • Give thanks for the good things God is doing in you.
  • Give thanks for the good things He is doing in others.

Pray:
  • Praise the Father that He is working amongst us to bring light in the darkness.
  • Give thanks for Jesus Christ who gives us the ultimate hope of resurrection life.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others give thanks as you witness His work in the world.
