Wisdom Wednesday

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?

Jeremiah 17:7-9

Over the past/next few Wednesdays, in keeping with our Wisdom Wednesday theme, I’m going to explore the idea of ‘Making Godly Decisions’. My experience is that many Christians desire to honour God with their lives but sometimes don’t know how.

Steve Jobs sums up the Northern Suburbs worldview when he says, “have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.” Listen to that inner voice. Trust that you know best.

But what if the Bible is right? What if the heart is actually deceitful? What if sin has corrupted us to the point where we deceive ourselves that bad is good and good is bad? What if our inner voice is sending us in the wrong direction?

The evidence is there. Following your heart doesn’t seem to be working for a whole bunch of people. Robin Williams famously said something similar to Steve Jobs even as he was severely depressed and eventually comitted suicide. I’m not convinced ‘follow your heart’ is working for people’s long-term happiness or for good societal outcomes.

But what if there was a voice we could listen to of someone who knew what was good and wanted it for us? What if there was someone who had told us how we should live in a way that was helpful rather than destructive. What if hey?

For Today:
  • Who do you listen to to make godly decisions?
  • Has your ‘inner voice’ ever led you astray?
  • Are you listening to God’s voice as you make decisions?

Pray:
  • Praise the Father that He knows all things and has spoken in the Scriptures and through His Son.
  • Give thanks for Jesus who listened faithfully to the Father and who shows us the pattern of true joy.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others listen to Him and make good decisions in life.
