Who is the Lord?

And God spoke all these words:

2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

Exodus 20:1-2

I want you to imagine something. You’re stopped at a red light and someone knocks on your window.  They say, “please get out of the car, I need the car.” Now, what do you do? Well, it depends doesn’t it?

It depends on a few things. But almost certainly, who they are. For instance, if they are someone you have never seen before. You’re likely to lock the door. But what if they then show you a badge. Or what if, it’s your mum or your dad and actually, they own the car.

Before God gives commands He reminds Israel who He is. Moses writes for us, God spoke all these words. He reminds them what He’s done for them. I am the Lord who brought you out of slavery in Egypt.

The Bible has a lot of commands in it. We don’t love rules. We particularly don’t love rules that we feel might make life less fun or satisfying. But we need to remember who is giving us these commands. It’s God. The God who made us. Who knows us. Who loves us. Who died on the cross for us.

We can trust His commands are good. He isn’t stealing our car and taking off with it. His next words are. “Here, let me show you the best way to drive the car I gave you.” He’s lovingly helping us to use the life He’s given us for the purpose He made us for the joy He made us to experience.

For Today:
  • What ‘command’ of God’s do you struggle with most?
  • What has God done for you?
  • What does it look like for you to be obedient to Him today?

Pray:
  • Praise the Father that He made us and knows us.
  • Give thanks for Jesus who shows us how to live our best lives.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others trust in God and His commands.
