Wisdom Wednesday

For lack of discipline they will die,
led astray by their own great folly.

Proverbs 5:23

Over the past/next few Wednesdays, in keeping with our Wisdom Wednesday theme, I’m going to explore the idea of ‘Making Godly Decisions’. My experience is that many Christians desire to honour God with their lives but sometimes don’t know how.

The funny thing is. I reckon a lot of the time. People do know what the right choice is. Deep down. They know. But what they find hard is the discipline to follow their convictions.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve spoken to people who choose to date a non-Christian, knowing that it’s a bad idea. Yet they just can’t do what they know they should. It’s heartbreaking to watch.

Or they make a good decision and break up. But then the feelings become too strong again and it’s back on.

This happens to all of us in so many spheres of life. Whether it’s how much TV we watch. What we watch. How we spend our money. Who we spend time with. It’s often discipline that lets us down.

And yet. Discipline is possible. Most people manage to brush their teeth every day. Which to be honest, is so annoying. But because we hate the feeling of unbrushed teeth or because of the fear of bad breath or big dentist bills, we do it.

Almost all of us can be disciplined when we want to. So there is the key. We need to want to… more. How could we want to be more disciplined in our godly decision making & follow through?

How about I leave that for next week.

For Today:
  • Do you often know what you should do? But then don’t do it?
  • What is one area of the Christian life where you are struggling for discipline?
  • What is most upsetting about that?

Pray:
Praise the Father that He is unfailing in His promises, faithfulness and love. Give thanks for Jesus who was perfectly disciplined in His choice to save His people. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others be more disciplined in following your convictions.
