Blasphemy
"You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name".
Exodus 20:7
Blasphemy! Not a word we hear or use very often anymore. For the older migrant families among us, maybe something you would hear your grandparents say. But for most, you probably only heard it in the movies. What does it mean to misuse the name of God?
Well, firstly, we are reminded that God's name was given for a use - a purpose. What was the purpose of God giving His name? In Exodus 3, God gives the name Yahweh, so that Israel might know the God who promises their rescue.
God's name, Yahweh or literally ' Am Who I Am', speaks to His Lordship. He is the one and only true God. The God who creates all things. The purpose of God giving His name, was to encourage Israel that He is the Almighty God.
But to misuse God's name is to treat Him not as the Almighty who is to be feared and revered, but as a joke. As I said a week or two ago, to make light of God's name is to make light of God.
And so it is today. Today, we hear the name of the Saviour and Lord of the world as a curse word or just a word to fill some conversational space. There will come a day when people will have to answer for making light of Him and His name.
Let us not be those. But who gives Jesus the reverence and honour He deserves.
For Today:
Pray:

For Today:
- Do you find yourself saying 'my God' or 'Jesus' in a light-hearted way?
- Do you think that reflects how you think about Jesus/God?
- How could you honour Jesus' name today?
Pray:
- Praise the Father that He is the God who Is.
- Give thanks for Jesus Christ our Saviour & Lord.
- Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others revere and honour Christ's name with your life today.
