Wisdom Wednesday

The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him;

Psalm 37:23

This will be the last week (for a while) where we will officially explore the idea of ‘Making Godly Decisions’. As I said in the previous Wednesday blog,

Phillip Jensen helpful offers three categories of wisdom in decision making:
1. Matters of righteousness
2. Matters of good judgement
3. Matters of trivia

So let’s talk trivia. What’s the tallest mountain in the world? Hint - it’s not Everest.

No seriously. Does God care about what we have for breakfast? What about our hobbies and even where we go on holiday? There are so many decisions in life that feel relatively inconsequential. But before we go there. Let’s be mindful of one complexity.

Sometimes, one decision might be trivial. But a habit of similar decisions leads to what might have been a matter of trivia into a matter of good judgement. For instance, I don’t think God’s overly concerned about what you do for a hobby. But if you continually choose that hobby over matters of righteousness (Church/Bible/Prayer etc.), then it’s no longer trivial.

Other times however, we shrink matters of trivia to only what we have for breakfast when actually, this category might be broader than you think. For instance, what job we do. For many of us, our job/career choices aren’t a matter of good/bad. Tradie? Teacher? Graphic designer? No worries. Whatever you do, do it for the glory of God and do it in such a way that allows you to prioritise growing the Kingdom of God.

So don’t sweat the small stuff but be careful that the small stuff doesn’t turn into bigger stuff. But should we include God in these trivial decisions? Should we pray before we eat breakfast or get a carpark? My suggestion - pray all the time, give thanks, but don’t wrestle with God’s will over whether you have cornflakes or toast.

For Today:
  • Have you written something off as trivial when actually it has become a bigger issue?
  • Do you spend too much time thinking on trivial matters?
  • How could you make your life simpler in areas of little consequence?

Pray:
  • Praise the Father that He cares about our lives.
  • Give thanks for Jesus who came to save us from our greatest problem.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to light our paths and help us be wise.
