And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters

Romans 8:28-29

I don’t know about you. But I’ve made a lot of mistakes in life. I’ve made decisions that hurt me and many that hurt others. I don’t think I’m the chief of sinners (as Paul calls himself) but I’ve done my fair share.

What comfort is there for anyone who has made mistakes? If you are an atheist, there is none. Or perhaps there is some in that ultimately everything is meaningless.

But for the Christian, there is a far greater comfort. It’s that God is at work. He turns our mistakes and messes into things of beauty and value. It’s hard. We don’t always get to see how our little smudge actually contributes to the beauty of the artwork.

But I think of what we can see. For instance, the Apostle Peter’s great mistake, the rejection of Christ, was a piece in the greatest victory of God. Or, the times when my sin has led me to repentance and caused me to change to be more like Jesus Christ.

I would rather not make mistakes or sin. It’s not good that I sin. But it is a comfort to know that God is at work turning my sins to the good of His great plan. For that, I’m thankful.

For Today:
  • What sins or mistakes haunt you?
  • Have you seen God turn one of your mistakes into good?
  • How have you seen God at work in your life to make you more like Christ?

Pray:
  • Praise the Father that He is sovereign and is bringing good out of our evil.
  • Give thanks for Jesus Christ who made no mistakes or sins.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others flee from sin but also to trust Him in the midst of it.
