S.0.S.

Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

1 Peter 2:2-3

Life is full of cravings. Family. Friendship. Fulfilment. Food. Fun. I’ve run out of f’s. Perhaps we could add one more. Faith.

Deep down we need a mature and strong faith. A solid assurance of who God is and His love. A confidence in how to live and please our Maker. But because of our sin, we don’t naturally crave what is good for us.

We are like children who, given the chance, would choose junk food over vegetables. We prefer coke to water. In real terms, this has led to a form of popular Christianity that doesn’t really engage with the Bible but prefers a junk-food version of God.

But Peter commands us to crave pure spiritual milk like a newborn baby. To crave that which will actually grow us up healthy and strong. He has in mind the Scriptures. They are the milk of God. They are full of what we need for a strong faith.

But is that what you crave? Often, it isn’t what I crave. I would rather have junk food. But my ongoing prayer is that God would change my taste buds… change my cravings… and He already has. Compared to years gone by, I find myself more and more drawn to the Bible.

But, even as we ask God to change our cravings. Just like I force myself to eat broccoli, we should keep doing what’s healthy for us even if we aren’t craving it.

For Today:
  • Do you desire a strong faith?
  • Are you regularly in the Bible? How could you be more?
  • Ask God to help you crave spiritual milk for a strong faith.

Pray:
  • Praise the Father that He is the source of all faith and spiritual satisfaction.
  • Give thanks for Jesus Christ through whom we are born again spiritually.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others crave spiritual milk and a strong faith.
