Wisdom Wednesday
Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly.
1 Timothy 4:7
My grandmother is from another time. She was born one of eight children, in a small village in the east of Italy. Her marriage was arranged for her when she was 18 years to a man she had hardly met.
She is a lady of deep superstition. We were warned never to wear dark clothes when we went to her place. Dark clothes represent death. The best of her myths was this. Whenever we introduced her to a new grandchild (my kids), she would rub a 50$ note on their head - to make sure they would make lots of money.
Now we know that’s crazy. And no self-respecting Christian would do anything like that. But what about the Daniel diet? Or the prayer of Jabez? Or more likely today, conspiracy theories or speculations about the timing of the return of Christ.
Paul is warning Timothy to not be distracted by stuff that sounds spiritual but actually isn’t. To not give valuable time or energy to these distractions when that time/energy could be given to growing our godliness.
Let’s learn from this episode and hear Paul’s words to Timothy. Greater godliness, humility, knowledge of the Scriptures, serving others, gathering with God’s people etc. etc. that’s what we give our time and energy to. Things rooted in truth.
For Today:
Pray:
