In View

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

Romans 12:1-2

We have been watching Grand Designs lately (be wary, dangerous for the heart). One recurring theme is building for a view. Be it the ocean, a vineyard or a mountain range, people often build with a view in mind. During the ravages of the construction process, this outlook provides a source of hope and motivation to continue with the hardships and expense.

To be a Christian is to live in view of God’s mercy. For eleven chapters, Paul has been proclaiming the good news about Jesus Christ. That the righteous God sent His righteous Son to suffer and die for unrighteous men and women so that they might become righteous and enjoy the blessings of God. When you survey it properly, it’s a glorious image.

Greater than any ocean, our mountain range, our vineyard - we gaze on the love, mercy, grace, justice and goodness of God. It reminds us of why we build our lives around Christ. When our sin weighs us down, or when the storms of life hinder us, when we get tired of fighting and serving, we look again to this glorious view and we find hope.

For Today:
  • Would you say your life is built around God’s mercy?
  • What do you find remarkable about the gospel?
  • Take some time today to reflect on God’s goodness to you in Christ.

Pray:
  • Praise the Father for His great mercy, love, grace, justice and goodness.
  • Give thanks for Jesus Christ who embodies the mercies of God to sinners.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others see clearly the mercy of God in the gospel and build your life around it.
