Bondslaves

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

Romans 12:1-2

One of my favourite movies is Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Robin of Locksley (Kevin Costner) comes back from the crusades to find his family on the wrong side of the King and becomes an outlaw. But in this version of the story, he does not leave the Holy Land alone. He is accompanied by Azeem (Morgan Freeman).

Azeem (along with Locksley) was locked up in a Jerusalem prison and was destined for slavery or death. But it was Robin who freed him and saved his life. Therefore, Azeem dedicates his life to Robin and becomes his faithful bondslave (a voluntary form of slavery).

What would you do if someone saved your life? Flowers? Chocolates? A thankyou card? I won’t dedicate time to diagnosing our cultural issues. Instead, let us turn to the story of Jesus.

We were slaves to our sins. Unable to free ourselves. On an inevitable course toward death and the worst fate of eternal suffering. But He came into our prison. He rescued us from our chains and brought us up out of the pit to live a new life.

What do we owe Him? Everything… Not flowers, not chocolates or other tokens of thanks. We owe Him everything. Do you see that today?

For Today:
  • What has Jesus rescued you from?
  • Would you describe yourself as a bondslave to Christ?
  • What are you hesitant to give over to Jesus?

Pray:
  • Praise the Father for His grace in sending Christ into our prison.
  • Give thanks for Jesus who endured our just punishment in our place.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others dedicate yourselves as living sacrifices for Him.
