10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Ephesians 2:10

I’ve been unemployed a few times in my life. My first University degree was a Bachelor of Arts majoring in History & Politics. To steal a movie quote, all this meant is that I could think deeper thoughts about being unemployed.

I remember it was really hard. That feeling of purposelessness. You wake up in the morning and you kind of just think… what am I going to do today? Why am I getting up again?

Humans need purpose. I think that’s pretty clear. Because God designed us with both a need for purpose and a purpose to meet that need. It’s His purpose.
But this is the thing I am thankful for today. I didn’t wake up today thinking… why am I getting up again? In fact, no Christian ever needs to do that. Because we know.

Today, God has given you another day to do the good works. He made you and saved you to do. What are they? I don’t know! But they are out there. Maybe today they are simply earning money to contribute to God’s Kingdom or enjoy a day of rest so that you can serve people more tomorrow. Maybe it’s inviting someone for a cup of tea to see how they are going.

Whatever it is. There are good works to be done. The question is - will you live out your purpose today? I’m thankful that we’ve got one.

For Today:
  • Have you ever felt purposeless?
  • What good works has God given you to do today?
  • Give thanks that you have a good purpose.

Pray:
  • Praise the Father that He made us for His glorious purposes.
  • Give thanks for Jesus Christ who lived out His purpose perfectly and made a way for us to live out ours.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others see God’s purpose and joyfully live it out today.
