Wisdom Wednesday

You are good, and what you do is good
teach me your decrees.

Psalm 19:68

Most of us desire to do the ‘right thing’ and be good people. But in a complicated world - what does this look like? Over the coming Wednesdays we’re going to consider ethics, morals and how we can be good and do good.

Goodness, ethics and morals begin with God. How do we know what goodness is? How can we discern what is right and what is wrong? We need a standard. A perfect standard that we might compare to.

As the Psalmist declares. God is good. Not just, better than most or more good than evil. He is perfectly good and His ways are always good. To be good and to do what is right is possible because of God and is knowable because God has revealed what is good.
So our task is not futile. But knowing what good looks like is, in many ways, the easy bit. The courage to do it. Now, that’s where things get hard.

Next week and beyond we will start looking at real life and the situations we or someone we know might find ourselves in and ask the question - what does it look like to do what is good?

For Today:
  • Do you believe that God is good?
  • Is God your standard for good? Do you look to Him?
  • What is one situation where you are struggling to know what is right/good?

Pray:
  • Praise the Father that He is good and His ways are good.
  • Give thanks for Jesus Christ who shows us what it looks like to do good in the world.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others to do good even when it’s hard.
