Advent Day 2

5 In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. 7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.
8 Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, 9 he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.

Luke 1:5-10

We are anticipating the birth of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, our Lord. This is advent. And this year we are following Luke’s gospel as he passes on to us the eyewitness accounts of Jesus’ life.

For those familiar with the story might wonder, why start with Zechariah and Elizabeth? Well, there is something very special going on here. But to see it, you need to know your Old Testament (particularly Genesis).

Luke tells us that Elizabeth and Zechariah were righteous in the sight of God. This is a throwback to Genesis 6:9 and the description of Noah. But we are also told that they were both very old and childless. What does that remind you of? Abraham & Sarai right.

This is one of the things I love most about the Bible. The patterns and clues littered throughout the Old Testament that weave a story no human could have predicted or put together. This is God’s great story and it’s by His grace He reveals it to us and through it can become beneficiaries.

The clues of today's passage suggest that what is about to happen is significant. Will it be a flood of God’s judgement? Or a promised child that represents God’s grace? Let’s find out tomorrow.

For Today:
  • Have you read Genesis?
  • What do you think is the significance of this passage?
  • Ask God to help you know the Bible better.

Pray:
  • Praise the Father that He is the Lord of History
  • Give thanks for Jesus who is the hero of the story.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others know the Scriptures well.
