Advent Day 9
And Mary said:
“My soul glorifies the Lord
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
for the Mighty One has done great things for me—
holy is his name.
Luke 1:46-49
We are anticipating the birth of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, our Lord. This is advent. And this year we are following Luke’s gospel as he passes on to us the eyewitness accounts of Jesus’ life.
I’m not really one for grand gestures. I think it’s a personality thing. But it might also be a laziness thing. Grand gestures, however, do have their own kind of impact on the ones who receive them.
Who is Mary? We don’t know much. Most likely she is one of the approximately 90+ percentage of Jewish women who are from a peasant class. Just above the poverty line. Today she would live in government housing, have a job, but only earn enough to keep a very basic life.
As Mary says. Who is she to deserve such an honour as to bear a child who is the Son of God? She is, relatively speaking, no one. And yet God chose to favor her with this blessing.
And so Mary sings our song. Who are we to receive God’s grandest of gestures, the blessing of His Son? As Paul says, we are the fools of the world. We aren’t the most intelligent, the strongest or the ‘goodest’. We are relatively speaking nobodies.
And yet, God sent His Son to save us from our sins. To restore us as His image bearers. And to gift us with the inheritance of His children - eternal life.
So let’s sing with Mary today. For we are blessed. The Mighty One has done great things for us. Oh my soul, glorify the Lord.
For Today:
Pray:
