Advent - Day 12

62 Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. 63 He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.” 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak, praising God. 65 All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea people were talking about all these things. 66 Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, “What then is this child going to be?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.

Luke 1:62-66

We are anticipating the birth of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, our Lord. This is advent. And this year we are following Luke’s gospel as he passes on to us the eyewitness accounts of Jesus’ life.

How cool would it be? To see someone mute suddenly be able to speak. Or to witness a blind man see for the first time? How awesome would it be to witness this type of miracle? All the neighbours are filled with awe as they hear and accept by faith it’s truth.

I wonder how this would go today? Would people today be filled with awe? No. We are too sceptical. Too cynical. And so we would miss it.

This is the tragedy of Christmas. God has done something far more awesome than allow a man to speak. He has spoken in His Son. The virgin has given birth. God has become man. God has announced Himself in light.

Christian, be reminded today and look on in awe. What a thing God has done. How privileged are we to have heard of this miracle and accept it by faith.

But let us also cast our mind to those who are missing out. Who are longing for something awesome and yet… whether it’s scepticism, cynicism or ignorance, find themselves distanced from the object of their deepest desires.

Receiving a good present can be awesome. Going on a nice holiday in a beautiful place can be awesome. But what if we can give people something better this Christmas. What if we can introduce them to the most awesome thing in this world - God Himself.

That’s what Christmas is. It’s God revealing His glory.

For Today:
  • What do you find awesome about God?
  • Spend 5 minutes praising God today.
  • Invite one person to Church on Sunday.

Pray:
  • Praise the Father that He is glorious.
  • Give thanks for Jesus who reveals to us the glory of God.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others share the glory of God with others.
