Advent - Day 17

11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

Luke 2:11-15

We are anticipating the birth of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, our Lord. This is advent. And this year we are following Luke’s gospel as he passes on to us the eyewitness accounts of Jesus’ life.

Has Christmas lost a bit of its allure for you? Has the star lost its lustre? There was a time wasn’t there? When Christmas was just the best. Come and see we would say to siblings or friends. Come and see our tree. Or come and see our presents. Come and see what we got!

Christmas at its heart is an invitation to come and see. That’s what’s captured in today’s passage. Shepherds, the salt of the earth, no doubt plodding along with sheep in tow. The hill they climb looks no different to the last hill. Just another day. Hopefully some greener grass just over the rise.

When of all things an angel appears (see verses 1-6) with an announcement. Come and see! Not my new socks and undies. But the Messiah. He has been born in Bethlehem. Wow, that’s a little different. And just to confirm it. Not just one angel, but a company!

This is the message of Christmas. Come and see. In the Scriptures with eyes of faith, we get to see something special, something shiny, something glorious. It’s Jesus. It’s the glory of God.

And if you do see it. Then let’s hear the words of the song. Glory to God. Glory in the highest. Oh come let us adore Him… You know the rest. For He is worthy of our adoration. He is Christ, the Lord.

For Today:
  • How are you feeling about Christmas? Why?
  • What’s one thing you are excited about?
  • Listen to and sing Oh Come All Ye Faithful.

Pray:
  • Praise the Father that we can see His glory in Christ.
  • Give thanks for Jesus who is worthy of our adoration.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others adore Him today.
