Advent - Day 24
49 “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” 50 But they did not understand what he was saying to them.
51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.
Luke 2:49-52
We are anticipating the birth of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, our Lord. This is advent. And this year we are following Luke’s gospel as he passes on to us the eyewitness accounts of Jesus’ life.
Christmas Eve. No doubt for many of you the Christmas festivities begin today or have already begun. And I do really hope that it’s an enjoyable time for you. It’s great to celebrate.
But I want to encourage you also from our passage today. Mary and Joseph have been looking for Jesus in Jerusalem. He’s twelve years old and they haven’t seen Him for 3 days. And they’re puzzled by His response to them. Essentially, where did you think I would be? Didn’t you know I’d be in my Father’s house (He’s talking about the temple).
Here we are reminded of Jesus’ greatest desire. It’s to be with His Father.
Village, Christmas is a time where many desires may be fulfilled. Rest, celebration, good food and family time. But above all, let it be a time where we fix our eyes on God and dedicate ourselves anew to Him. In His kindness, He has adopted us into His family through Jesus Christ.
He is our Heavenly Father, our first family. He is our greatest supporter. Our kindest gift-giver. Be mindful of Him today and tomorrow and He deserves our attentiveness. In His kindness, He sent Christ to us, so that our hearts might be turned to Him. Ask that He would help you be mindful of Him.
And what better way than celebrating Him and His Son tomorrow in the new house of God, His gathered Church. Look forward to seeing you tomorrow.

For Today:
- What are you desiring this Christmas?
- Do you desire more of God and to be with God? Why? Why not?
- Ask God to help you desire Him more today.
Pray:
- Praise the Father that He has adopted us into His family.
- Give thanks for Jesus who paid for our adoption.
- Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others make Him your deepest desire this Christmas.
