Begotten Son

I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth
And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord

Apostle’s Creed

Did you grow up speaking the Apostle’s Creed out loud at Church? Why do or did Churches do that? It most likely wasn’t written by the Apostles themselves. However, it does capture the teachings of the Apostles in a concise, faithful and easy to memorise piece of writing.

Today, the second sentence. To be a Christian, according to the Apostles' teaching is to believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and to call Him Lord. Let’s break that down.

It truly is a remarkable statement. Something we spent some time on over Christmas. That Jesus Christ, a man documented in history, was truly the second member of the Trinity, God Himself come in flesh. As a great song puts it:

See the King who made the sun, And the moon and shining stars
Let the soldiers hold and nail Him down, So that He could save them

That is what we believe. Now, what about that begotten bit? Well, that’s a bit trickier. For a detailed explanation, try this.

But for now, something a bit simpler than Jesus’ eternal begottenness. To be a Christian isn’t just to believe that Jesus Christ is God, the Son. It’s to pledge your allegiance to Him. It’s to declare Him Lord. It’s to follow Him faithfully as your King.

To be a Christian isn’t to follow His teachings but doubt His nature. It isn’t to believe He is God and yet ignore His teachings. To be a Christian is to hold on to these things with both hands. Do you?

Today:

  • Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord
  • Reflect on Jesus’ nature as God
  • Are you living with Him as your Lord?

Pray:

  • Praise the Father for His Son, Jesus Christ.
  • Give thanks for Jesus who is our good and kind Lord.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others follow Him faithfully.
