I Saw The Sign

He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Matthew 12:39-40

One thing that hasn’t changed in 2000 years is the human desire to see something cool. I’m sure you feel it. Wouldn’t it be awesome to see God make the sun stand still (like in the book of Joshua) or someone with a broken leg, instantly healed.

There’s probably two reasons we would love to see these things. Firstly, just for the sheer novelty and entertainment of it. It’s just not something that you see every day, it would just be interesting. But secondly, because we feel it would confirm our faith.

We think a sign like that would confirm once and for all that we are on the right track. That following Jesus is the smart move and the doubters are all wrong. We want our faith confirmed in a way that makes us sure.

It’s worth noting that many people saw Jesus’ do miracles and didn’t believe. But also it’s worth wrestling with the nature of faith. Jesus says to Thomas who wouldn’t believe unless he saw the holes in Jesus hands and the mark in His side, blessed are they who don’t see and yet believe.

Jesus has given us all a sign. It’s the sign of Jonah. His death and resurrection. And His desire and plan is for this sign to be sufficient in proving who He was. So really, the question for us today should never be, show us a sign but do I trust in the sign Jesus has already given me?

Today:

  • Do you deeply long to see something miraculous? Why? Why not?
  • Do you trust in the sign of Jesus' death and resurrection?
  • What could you do if you are struggling to have faith?

Pray:
  • Praise the Father for His grace in confirming that He is there.
  • Give thanks for Jesus who has given us a sign of His Lordship.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others trust in the sign God has given.
