Wisdom Wednesday

Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”
Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”

Luke 12:13-15

I was reflecting the other day on how easily I buy things. One of the reasons we struggle to think of Christmas/birthday presents is because if we need/want something - we usually buy it. And Amazon is there to make sure it’s an easy process. This will be true to a lesser or more extent for most of us reading this blog. And part of the reason is that possessions have become cheap. I remember when a big TV cost $4000-5000. Really big ones cost under $1000 now.

What’s the big deal? Well, as any person who has moved house can tell you - we have become accumulators of an abundance of possessions. From TV’s and other electronics to surfboards and camping equipment. And in the sinful heart, this produces a desire for more. We get used to having whatever we want and we think this is what makes for a good life. Be on your guard. Our physical inheritance is in the next life. Not this one.

Today:
  • Do you have an abundance of possessions?
  • Instead of buying the next thing you want - give the money away.
  • Reflect on your heart and ask if you are on your guard against greed.

Pray:
  • Praise God for His grace, giving good things to all in spite of our sins.
  • Give thanks for Christ who forgives our greed and gives us the wonderful hope of eternal paradise.
  • Ask God to help you and others be on your guard against greed.
