54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”
55
“Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?”
56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 15:54-56
As I write this blog, I’ve got a football game on in the background. It’s not looking pretty for one of the teams, meanwhile for the other well, let’s just say they are smiling. Sport reminds us of the feeling of victory and defeat. It sucks to lose, it’s an awful feeling. And the higher the stakes, the harder the feelings. At the same time, victory is sweet.
Victory in life is in some sense what all people are looking for. They approach the game in different ways. Victory might look like becoming powerful or rich. Or it might look like having a family and a peaceful existence. How rare though that people actually achieve their goal?
And what of the person who thinks they’ve done it. They get to the finish line, feeling like they have won. Only to stand before God and find out they’ve actually been kicking own goals their whole life.
But this is not you Christian. In fact the marvellous reality of faith in Christ is that you could be a loser in every worldly sense and yet find yourself standing on the podium at the end. This is Paul’s very point in 1 Corinthians.
You may suffer many defeats in life but in Christ, we are victorious over our greatest rival - death. In Christ and because of Christ you will get to enjoy the sweetest victory dance, forever.

Today:
- When have you felt the deepest sadness of defeat? Or of victory?
- What does it look like for you to ‘win’ in life?
- Give thanks that Jesus gives us victory in life.
Pray:
- Praise the Father that He is the undefeated God.
- Give thanks for Jesus and His victory in His death & resurrection.
- Ask God for His Holy Spirit to give you and others joy at the victory we have to look forward to.
