Easter Wednesday

  he will swallow up death forever.
The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears
    from all faces;
he will remove his people’s disgrace
    from all the earth.
The Lord has spoken.

In that day they will say,

“Surely this is our God;
    we trusted in him, and he saved us.
This is the Lord, we trusted in him;
    let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation.”

Isaiah 28:8-9

It’s the lead up to Easter and I wanted to take the rest of the week to reflect on the events of 2000 years ago.

Promises don’t feel like they mean what they used to. How absolutely true this is, I don’t know but there is a sense of a time when people felt the need to be more true to their word even though it cost them. Marriage vows are of course the saddest example of the change.

But on the flip-side. That does allow for radical promise-keeping to be a wonderful contrast.

So it is with God’s promise to His people. In Genesis 3, He promises to Adam & Eve a child who will one day win the ultimate victory over evil. To Abraham He promises many sons and daughters who will enjoy the provision of God in a paradise-like place. To Moses and Israel, God promises to redeem His people from their slavery and lead them into the promised land.

As we see in Isaiah, God's promises don’t get smaller, they only get larger. He gives them hope beyond death and the removal of the disgrace of sin.

God has put His name to some big claims. But all are fulfilled in the cross & resurrection of Jesus Christ. Though it cost Him the suffering of His only begotten Son, the Father did not renege on His promises. Paul says in 2 Corinthians 1:20 - For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ.

It is really worth reflecting on how remarkable it is that so many promises are realised in that first Easter. But most of all we should make the logical conclusion of Isaiah 28. We can trust God. He keeps His promises. And for those who do trust, this means we can rejoice.

We can rejoice because Jesus is victorious over sin and so can we be. Jesus is victorious over the world and Satan and so can we be. Jesus is victorious over death and so shall we be.

Today:
  • Rejoice today that God has kept His promises and trust Him.
  • Rejoice today that Jesus has died and rose again.
  • Rejoice today that your hope for life after death is certain.

Pray:
  • Praise the Father that He is trustworthy and keeps His promises.
  • Give thanks for Jesus who came to fulfil the promises of God through His death and resurrection.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others trust in God’s promises and rejoice.
