Theology Thursday

He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.

Luke 24:25-27

Thursdays are for theology and for the next few months we are going to spend Thursdays exploring a critical aspect of theology called Biblical Theology.

Now at first, Biblical Theology sounds funny. Isn’t all theology ‘Biblical Theology’?

Biblical Theology refers to a way of understanding the Bible as being a progressive revelation of God. That clears it up doesn’t it. Ha.

There are two primary ways of engaging theologically with the Bible. One is systematically - looking at everything the Bible says about a particular topic. To do this you might search the Bible for every passage that explains or touches on God’s love and then you would develop a harmonisation of those passages into a theology of God’s love.

Biblical theology, in contrast, is to follow Biblical themes as they develop Biblically. So tracing themes like creation, the image of God, sin, salvation, kingdom, covenant the temple, and so much more, as they progress toward their ultimate goal of Jesus Christ.

It’s going to be fun. It’s going to be fascinating and most of all it’s going to be faithful to the Scriptures and therefore we can be confident that it will grow your faith in the Bible and most of all in Jesus Christ.

For Today:
  • Have you ever heard of Biblical Theology?
  • Have you noticed a theme that seems to become more clear throughout the Bible?
  • Do you believe that all the Scriptures point to Jesus Christ?

Pray: Praise the Father that He has revealed Himself and His purpose in Christ. Give thanks for Jesus who is the ultimate fulfilment of all things. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others read the Bible better.
