3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures
1 Corinthians 15:3-5
We are doing a series on Biblical Theology. Tracing Biblical themes as they are revealed throughout the Bible and reach their ultimate expression in the person, work and effects of Jesus.
Paul says something intriguing in 1 Corinthians 15. He is passing on what he received, Jesus died according to the Scriptures was buried and was raised on the third day again according to the Scriptures.
It’s this last bit I want to dwell on. Paul says Jesus was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures. Now, I’m not aware of any prophecy or passage that directly says that Messiah would be raised on the last day.
However, if you were to do a Bible search on ‘third day’, you’d be amazed at how often God does something surprising, often in the form of deliverance or a literary type of resurrection and it’s recorded as happening on the third day.
For instance, in Ester 5, we are told that Queen Ester approaches King Xerxes to rescue God’s people from the nefarious plan of Haman who will see all Jews killed in Persia. In Hosea 6, Hosea announces that God will restore His people on the third day, “as surely as the sun rises, He will appear.”
These are just two examples of this theme, found but fuzzy in the Old Testament that is brought to light in Jesus as He is raised on the third day for the salvation of people from their greatest enemy, death.
For Today:
Pray: Praise the Father for the glory of His Word. Give thanks for Jesus who is the ultimate fulfillment of His promises and plan. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you know and read the Scriptures better.

For Today:
- Have you ever noticed a theme that is unveiled across the Bible?
- Check out Genesis 22 and Jonah 1 for another example of God’s deliverance on the third day.
- How does this help us see the divine nature of Scripture?
Pray: Praise the Father for the glory of His Word. Give thanks for Jesus who is the ultimate fulfillment of His promises and plan. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you know and read the Scriptures better.
