Q. 2. What rule hath God given to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him?
A. The Word of God, which is contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, is the only rule to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him.

Westminster Shorter Catechism

I don’t know about you - but I’m not great at being told how to do something. Give me a task - no worries. Let me figure it out. In my own way. A way that works for me.

I reckon this is how a bunch of people are approaching their ‘faith’ right now. You see this when you encounter people who say they believe in God but don’t go to Church. Or read the Scriptures.

They are essentially saying, I’ll glorify God and enjoy Him my way. In a way that suits me and my life. But to say this is to ignore what God has told us IS glorifying and enjoying Him forever.

It’s like a wife saying to her husband - could you love me by spending more time with me. And then the husband just sending her flowers once a month in response and telling everyone - look how much I love my wife.

But how do we know how to glorify God? Well, as the Catechism tells us - we read the Scriptures. They are God’s instructions to us on how to glorify and enjoy Him forever. This is why we read them daily. This is why we memorise them. This is why we encourage each other to follow them faithfully.

Because the Scriptures are God’s Words to us on how to love Him best and enjoy life as we do.

For Today:
  • How are you going at reading the Bible?
  • How could you grow in knowing God’s instructions this week?
  • What’s one thing you could do this week to glorify God?

Pray:
Praise the Father for the Scriptures that teach us how to glorify & enjoy Him forever. Give thanks for Jesus Christ who shows us how to glorify God. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others know the Scriptures and glorify God through listening to Him.

Passages: Deuteronomy 4:2, Psalm 19:7-11, Matthew 19:4-5, 2 Peter 1:20-21, 2 Timothy 3:15-17
