Q.3. What do the Scriptures principally teach?
A. The Scriptures principally teach what man is to believe concerning God, and what duty God requires of man

Westminster Shorter Catechism

Across the centuries people have turned to the Bible for a variety of reasons. Still today - the likes of Jordan Peterson engage with the Scriptures as an interesting sociological and psychological document. Snippets remain in the wider consciousness - do not judge etc. But ultimately, to engage with the Bible this way is to miss its very essence.

The Bible exists that you may know who God is and what to believe about Him. The Scriptures have been given by God that you would know why He created you and what pleases Him. The answers to the fundamental questions of life are within our reach, in languages we can read and for those who have His Spirit, in a form we can comprehend. This is the grace of God to His people.

And what a grace it is. Our culture is struggling with knowing what to do with their lives. They are struggling with what to believe about the world. And it’s crippling. Like an awfully long silence - vacuums create anxiety. But God has filled up the emptiness through the Scriptures.

Remember - the goal is to glorify Him and enjoy Him forever. The best life. The most enjoyable life. Is one where you know the truth about God and how to live out the purpose you were created for.

For Today:
  • Is this what you think the Bible is?
  • How are you going at reading the Bible? How could you grow in this area?
  • Is there someone you could encourage to read their Bible more?

Pray:
Praise the Father for the Scriptures that teach us what is true and how to obey Him. Give thanks for Jesus who points us to the truth of the Scriptures. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others read the Bible and follow its teachings.

Passages: Deuteronomy 10:12-13, Joshua 1:8, Micah 6:8, John 5:39, John 20:31, 2 Timothy 3:15-17
