Theology Thursday

Q. 26. How doth Christ execute the office of a king?

A. Christ executeth the office of a king, in subduing us to himself, in ruling and defending us, and in restraining and conquering all his and our enemies.

Westminster Shorter Catechism

When I hear the word king, Prince Charles comes to mind. It’s a picture of a ceremonial figure. Turning up for photo shoots, smiling and waving. Perfecting the bland brand, saying nothing controversial nor insightful. He neither induces fear nor love.

Christ is nothing like this sort of King.
He is the courageous King who enters the world of darkness to save His bride.
He is the warrior King who came to wage war against the forces of evil and slays the devil.
He is the merciful King who forgives rebels to His rule.
He is the humble King who puts others before Himself.
He is the wise King who speaks words of insight, penetrating hearts and minds with His commands.
He is the compassionate King who cares for His people, providing for our physical and spiritual needs.
He is the just King who will judge wrongdoing with perfect rightness.
He is the generous King who offers us resurrection and eternal life in His Kingdom.

Christ is the Good King who we should follow and honour.

For Today:
  • Who do you think of when you hear the word, king?
  • Do you see Christ as your King? Do you follow and honour Him?
  • What does it look like to submit yourself to Christ today?

Pray:
  • Praise God, the Father that He gave Christ a Kingdom and a people to rule.
  • Give thanks for Jesus, for the good King that He is.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others to honour and follow Christ as King.

Passages: Matthew 28:18-20, Colossians 1:13, Psalm 2:6-9, Philippians 2:5-11, 1 Corinthians 15:24-26
