Q. 47. What is forbidden in the first commandment?

A. The first commandment forbiddeth the denying, or not worshipping and glorifying the true God as God, and our God; and the giving of that worship and glory to any other, which is due to him alone.

Westminster Shorter Catechism

Have you ever had someone take credit for something you did? I mean there are few things that people want more than credit for the good thing they did. Is it so strange then, that God wants to be acknowledged for who He is and what He has done?

There is a reality to the order of creation. God is God and God made everything. This makes it entirely right that He should be acknowledged as such. Now, if God had created, I don’t know, let’s say a brown paper bag and that’s it. I’m not sure how great that is.

But when you consider the wonders of the universe. The mystery of human nature. The weaving of history. Isn’t it just right that God should be given the credit He deserves.

But this suggests simply acknowledgement. We must go further. For what God has done is more than simply interesting or worthy of note. His work in creation and in salvation is the greatest masterpiece of all time.

If we would say wow to a mountain range, a TV series, a space shuttle, a sporting achievement. Then how much more should we not only give credit where credit is due to God, but in reverence and awe.

For Today:
  • Do you see that God is worthy of all glory?
  • How don’t we give God the glory He deserves?
  • Give God praise today for His work in creation & salvation.

Pray:
  • Praise the Father for His works, praise Him for the universe, praise Him for your life.
  • Praise Christ for His faithfulness, and for your salvation and hope.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others give Him the praise He deserves.
