Q. 102. What do we pray for in the second petition?
A. In the second petition, which is, Thy kingdom come, we pray, that Satan’s kingdom may be destroyed; and that the kingdom of grace may be advanced, ourselves and others brought into it, and kept in it; and that the kingdom of glory may be hastened.
Westminster Shorter Catechism
Are you frustrated with the evil you see in the world? Do you read, hear, watch the news and despair? Do you long to see more people trusting Jesus, following Him, loving Him and people? Are you tired of the fact that sometimes you don’t care about these things like you know you should?
This is why we pray, Thy Kingdom Come.
The Kingdom of God is the place where people look to, trust in and obey God as King. This place doesn’t have geographic boundaries (currently) like Australia or New Zealand. It is a Kingdom of hearts, minds and hands.
In heaven, all things obey God perfectly. Their minds think aligned with God’s thoughts. Their hearts feel like they should and their actions obey God’s commands and desires.
But here on earth there is rebellion. Our minds think not what can I do to please God but what can I do to please myself. Our hearts desire things we have no right or pleasures that will do ourselves and others no good. We don’t act like we should - in love and service of others.
What does the Kingdom of God look like? It looks like Jesus. Jesus shows us what heaven on earth could look like. He shows us a glimpse of what God is doing and what we pray for. Imagine, all people living like Jesus.
The Kingdom of God is the good place we all long for. It has no violence or pain. Its culture is love and service. In the Kingdom of God children don’t die, neither do adults. There is no poverty or loneliness.
So let’s pray today. That the Kingdom of Satan may be destroyed. That the Kingdom of Grace may be advanced. That we and others would be brought in and kept in this good Kingdom, forever.
For Today:
Pray:
Passages: Psalm 103:19, Daniel 2:44 & 4:3, Mark 1:15, Luke 17:20-21, Revelation 21-22
